Last night I lost my best friend. I was riding home from the train station on my Bianchi. Not my nicest bike by a long stretch but definitely the bike of mine with the most personality. I loved that thing to death. Touch up paint every weekend, obsessive cleaning, constant upgrades, etc. I was hit by a car who wasn’t paying attention while backing out of a parking spot. The top tube is now crumpled. The drivetrain and components all managed to survive. It breaks my heart that the bike is totaled. It was a best friend to me. While I don’t train on it, I used it to commute and just for fun. On top of this, when it’s 2am and I don’t know what I’m doing with life, it was my bike of choice to work my head out on. Here’s a toast and an RIP to the Bianchi, which I am now naming Scamp.
Through insurance I’ll be getting a Pink Cinelli Vigorelli. Here’s to hoping that I have at least half as close of a relationship with it as I did with Scamp. They say that rider’s form their closest bonds with their bikes. That’s absolutely true. They become an extension of your body. You become incredibly in tune with your bike and learn all of it’s faults and all of it’s strengths. When I was laying in the ER covered in blood and in a neck brace all I could think about was the bike. Before being transported to the hospital all I could say was “Don’t fucking lose my bike, don’t fucking lose my bike. Make sure my fucking bike makes it to my room. Do not fucking lose my bike. My bike. Please don’t lose my bike. Where’s my bike? Please take care of my bike. Please” When my friends arrived they pointed out how mangled it was. I broke free of the neck brace to look at it. My heart sank. It was a stupid ass pretty boy fixed gear but damn I really cared about it.
I’m sorry for writing something so long and silly, but any of you who have lost a friend like this will understand the feeling. If you have a bike of your own that’s like this, give her a good cleaning tonight and remind yourself how much you appreciate her.
Oh yeah, and shit, I have 45+ stitches in my eye and forehead. Fun week I’m having already.
